You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up: Pete Buttigieg Won Essay Contest In High School Defending Socialism And Hero Bernie Sanders

(Gateway Pundit) – Young Pete Buttigieg won an essay contest in 2000 as a high schooler from the Kennedy Library.

In his essay Pete Buttigieg in 2000 praises Bernie Sanders and his unapologetic stand for socialism.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

From the essay:

Fortunately for the political process, there remain a number of committed individuals who are steadfast enough in their beliefs to run for office to benefit their fellow Americans. Such people are willing to eschew political and personal comfort and convenience because they believe they can make a difference. One outstanding and inspiring example of such integrity is the country’s only Independent Congressman, Vermont’s Bernie Sanders.

Sanders’ courage is evident in the first word he uses to describe himself: “Socialist”. In a country where Communism is still the dirtiest of ideological dirty words, in a climate where even liberalism is considered radical, and Socialism is immediately and perhaps willfully confused with Communism, a politician dares to call himself a socialist? He does indeed. Here is someone who has “looked into his own soul” and expressed an ideology, the endorsement of which, in today’s political atmosphere, is analogous to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Even though he has lived through a time in which an admitted socialist could not act in a film, let alone hold a Congressional seat, Sanders is not afraid to be candid about his political persuasion.

After numerous political defeats in his traditionally Republican state, Sanders won the office of mayor of Burlington by ten votes. A successful and popular mayor, he went on to win Vermont’s one Congressional seat in 1990. Since then, he has taken many courageous and politically risky stands on issues facing the nation. He has come under fire from various conservative religious groups because of his support for same-sex marriages. His stance on gun control led to NRA-organized media campaigns against him. Sanders has also shown creativity in organizing drug-shopping trips to Canada for senior citizens to call attention to inflated drug prices in the United States.

While impressive, Sanders’ candor does not itself represent political courage. The nation is teeming with outspoken radicals in one form or another. Most are sooner called crazy than courageous. It is the second half of Sanders’ political role that puts the first half into perspective: he is a powerful force for conciliation and bi-partisanship on Capitol Hill. In Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy wrote that “we should not be too hasty in condemning all compromise as bad morals. For politics and legislation are not matters for inflexible principles or unattainable ideals.” It may seem strange that someone so steadfast in his principles has a reputation as a peacemaker between divided forces in Washington, but this is what makes Sanders truly remarkable. He represents President Kennedy’s ideal of “compromises of issues, not of principles.”

Sanders has used his unique position as the lone Independent Congressman to help Democrats and Republicans force hearings on the internal structure of the International Monetary Fund, which he sees as excessively powerful and unaccountable. He also succeeded in quietly persuading reluctant Republicans and President Clinton to ban the import of products made by under-age workers. Sanders drew some criticism from the far left when he chose to grudgingly endorse President Clinton’s bids for election and re-election as President. Sanders explained that while he disagreed with many of Clinton’s centrist policies, he felt that he was the best option for America’s working class.

Sanders’ positions on many difficult issues are commendable, but his real impact has been as a reaction to the cynical climate which threatens the effectiveness of the democratic system. His energy, candor, conviction, and ability to bring people together stand against the current of opportunism, moral compromise, and partisanship which runs rampant on the American political scene. He and few others like him have the power to restore principle and leadership in Congress and to win back the faith of a voting public weary and wary of political opportunism. Above all, I commend Bernie Sanders for giving me an answer to those who say American young people see politics as a cesspool of corruption, beyond redemption. I have heard that no sensible young person today would want to give his or her life to public service. I can personally assure you this is untrue.

For his screed on socialist Bernie Sanders young Pete won the Kennedy award which leaves us with this time-tested truth: Scratch a liberal find a committed socialist.

  1. Why is it that people who have not lived under a repressive socialist (read communist) regime promote it? Communist government have killed millions and millions of people for the sake of the State. Look at: The French Revolution, Joseph Stalin, Hitler, Communist China, etc. etc, They may not of used the word socialist, communist, but the control and destruction of life are common to these societies.

  2. Thanks Teaparty. That was an incredibly sophisticated essay for a high school student. When I think back to me at that age! He never actually praised socialism – only Bernie’s strength of character in committing himself to it in spite of public opinion.

  3. I don’t care what he does in his own bed but when he pushes his lifestyle on society in front of cameras – that’s way beyond normalcy. You want to live an immoral lifestyle that is your choice and the God that you say you believe in will judge you when it comes time to judge.

  4. Blacks need to ask Petey boy about the black on black gun violence in South Bend. This guy left quite a nasty legacy and should be held accountable.

  5. True Americans that believe in our Constitution will NOT support their personal freedoms being controlled by the government – this is what Socialism/ Communism is . It’s GOVERNMENT that EVENTUALLY CONTROLS EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE – NOT you being in control !! – Millennials wake up start using your OWN BRAIN before the Communists takes away your right to make your own decisions – GET EDUCATED . Free education, free healthcare IS NOT GOING TO BE FREE- you will be TAXED BEYOND ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE. I talked with a Canadian woman while I was in Canada on vacation about 13 years ago inside a Wal Mart – I asked her opinion of the Socialized Medicine- she told me it was ok AS LONG AS YOU STAY HEALTHY, but if you have a life threatening illness you would LITERALLY probably DIE having to WAIT ON BEING TREATED FOR IT- They can’t handle the SUPPLY AND DEMAND – PERIOD !! IF YOU ARE LUCKY YOU MAY TRY TO BE TREATED IN AMERICA MUCH SOONER TOHAVE A CHANCE of making it. She also said their TAXES are VERY HIGH . Putting it bluntly IT AIN’T WHAT ITS ALL CRACKED UP TO BE !!! Don’t get sick ….for ALL OF YOU ‘IF ITS FREE IT’S FOR ME’ believers – Canadians are JUST DYING TO GET INTO America!!! Not a joke.

  6. Although the photo of the couple in the article was not captioned, it wasn’t really necessary. With only the most casual perusal, the female in the photo is obviously Caroline Kennedy, the late JFK’s daughter! Was the omission of the photo caption intentional, or was it an admin oversight? As CK enjoys almost universal visual recognition, the question may well be academic, irrelevant, and/or moot. Just sayin’!

  7. What should be alarming to most of America does not seem to be setting off any alarms and that is the large number of our younger generation of voters that are being influenced by the attraction to Socialism, In their minds to them it means freedom, The fact is that Socialism is the exact opposite its the lack of freedom, choice and opportunity, They just dont seem to understand that if Socialism is that great, Why are so many from Socialist countries coming to America? It should be terrifying what must be going on in Classrooms in Colleges and universities across the country
Just this morning on the news several college students were asked about their views on Bernie Sanders it was amazing and scarry their response was that Bernies version of Socialism was a different kind of Socialism???There is only one type of Socialism and its all BAD.If Socialism is Americas future then our future is in Doubt and our Freedom and choice is in serious danger .

  8. He commends Sanders for standing “against the current of opportunism, MORAL COMPROMISE, and partisanship.” All of which define him and his “husband” as welI as the entire Democrat party with their sham impeachment nonsense! I haven’t noticed Bernie taking a stand against any of that!

  9. {{{{SHOCK}}}} What unusual position would ‘Mayor Pete’ not defend ? Seems he’s had a life time of them…..BTW : ‘The goal of socialism is communism…..Vladimir Lenin’…..My only request of ‘Mayor Pete’ is that I don’t have to see him hugging his husband for four years…….

  10. No surprise here….but this Obama backed politician is being painted by the media as a moderate. There is nothing about this guy that is moderate.
