(Conservative Tribune) – The American flag, of all things, has become a controversial symbol in recent years. When some tough guys tried to give an old woman some guff about her display of Old Glory, however, her neighbor decided to stick up for her in a video that’s going viral.
The veracity of the video couldn’t be ascertained, but the most common version of it was uploaded to YouTube on Monday. It contains footage of a woman confronting two punks who were harassing her regarding the flag.
As the woman approaches, you can see the main punk is wearing a “F— Trump” shirt with Deadpool on it, so you can tell we’re dealing with someone who’s schooled in the niceties of civilized debate. Apparently, he has a real problem with the fact that someone in the neighborhood has an American flag out.
The neighbor decided to even the score.
“Quit attacking her for no reason!” she says, before a more, um, vulgar interjection.
“I was over here — you just came up to her and started yelling at her and attacking her for no reason,” the neighbor can be heard saying.
“We asked her to take her flag down and she started screaming,” the man seems to say. (It’s something in that vein, I’m pretty sure of — suffice it to say this isn’t “Firing Line” with these two gentlemen, so some things are a bit hard to catch.)
“That is not your right,” the neighbor informs the punk.
“Yeah, actually, it is the law,” he proceeds to say.
Without opining too much on this individual from just the evidence in this video, I think it’s safe to say a guy wearing a “F— Trump” Deadpool T-shirt probably isn’t a member of the state bar, so I’m curious to know a) where this is the law, b) why he knows it and c) why he feels the need to be the enforcer when it comes to this resident.
I actually think we could stop our inquiry at a), since there’s literally no locale where that law is in effect, as it’s free speech and the 2005 Freedom to Display the American Flag Act specifically prohibits real estate management organizations from disallowing flying the flag.
Later on, our soi-disant legal expert says, “Four days ago, I came out, and (the flag) was out at 2 o’clock in the morning,” which he says is illegal. Unfortunately, our village idiot is still wrong; while the National Flag Code says that display of the flag is customarily from sunrise to sunset, “when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
There’s also no penalty for violating the federally mandated Flag Code, something that I doubt this Facebook University graduate quite grasps.
Then his friend, previously in the background, comes in as backup. His presence is significantly mitigated by the fact that he has a dog that’s not on a leash — which, unlike flying the flag, is actually against the law in most places.
Finally, the men storm off and threaten to call police, Permit Patty-style.
“Please,” the neighbor says, “please see what the police officers have to say about her having an American flag outside her freaking house.”
I’m truly curious if these two cretins actually called the police. I think there’s a decent chance that they did. Political discourse in this country has degenerated to the point where the American flag is now considered a point of contention and the fact that people feel triggered is literally all they need to think something is or should be illegal.
Thankfully, there are still neighbors like this one, willing to give individuals like this a piece of viral infamy. We can only hope that there will continue to be in the future.
