(InfoWars) – A new survey by the Poynter Institute and YouGov on trust in the media shows that 63% of Trump supporters agree with the president that the media are an “enemy of the people,” and nearly half — 44% — of Americans in general believe the news media “fabricate stories about President Trump more than once in a while.”

You’re Fake News! The 2017 Poynter Media Trust Survey was released on Nov. 29. According to the report’s executive summary, the survey is designed “to gauge the public’s support for the media in these difficult times.”

“Encouragingly, we find that the public supports the press, albeit weakly,” states the report. “However, this result masks dramatic polarization in media attitudes. Specifically, we show that Republicans and Trump supporters have far more negative attitudes toward the press than Democrats and Trump opponents, especially among respondents with high levels of political knowledge.”

“Republicans and Trump supporters are also far more likely to endorse extreme claims about media fabrication, to describe journalists as an enemy of the people, and to support restrictions on press freedom,” said the executive summary.”

The survey found that 12% of Americans have a “great deal” of trust in the media and 37% have a “fair amount” of trust in the press. However, 39% of the public said it has “not very much” trust and confidence in the media and 13% of Americans said they have “none at all.”

On political lines, 74% percent of Democrats share “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust and confidence in the press but only 19% of Republicans concur.

In addition, 69% of Americans believe the media “tend to favor one side.”

When it comes to President Trump, 44% of the public believes the media make up stories about him more than once in a while — 24% “about half the time,” 14% “most of the time,” and 6% “all of the time.” For Trump supporters, 77% believe the media fabricate stories about him more than once in a while.

Back on Feb. 17, President Trump tweeted, “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people.”

In the survey, researchers found that 31% of Americans agree with Trump that the media are the “enemy of the people” and another 31% believe the media “keep political leaders from doing their job.”

For Trump supporters, the percentages are higher: 63% believe the media are “an enemy of the people” and 64% think the press “keep political leaders from doing their job.”

For the survey, released on Nov. 29, YouGov interviewed 2,100 Americans and used a weighting and matching algorithim “to construct a final sample that mirrors the demographic composition of the U.S. population,” reported the Poynter Journalism Ethics Summit.
