(Dr. Jerome Corsi/ Tea Party) – Democratic Party Rep. Jose Serrano of New York has introduced into Congress a bill to repeal the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution that imposes a prohibition against any president serving more than two terms in office.
This has triggered the fear that President Barack Obama, fresh off defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney, is preparing to run or otherwise appoint himself president for life.
First, for those who are concerned, there is a petition posted on PopVox.com that allows each one of us to oppose Rep. Serrano’s House Joint Resolution 15 to repeal the 22 Amendment.
As of this writing, 99 percent of those expressing their views on PopVox.com of the approximately 5,000 who have voted are opposed to repealing the 22 Amendment.
Truthfully, fears that this is a power-grab by Obama are unfounded, although Obama’s arrogant disregard of the Constitution and his repeated presidential directives that have functioned to circumvent Congress and the legislative process give rise to the concern Obama has little understanding of or appreciation for the limits of his office our Founding Fathers intended.
The 22nd Amendment was enacted in 1951, after Congress decided to set a two-term limit to avoid any future president being re-elected for life, as Franklin D. Roosevelt effectively accomplished when he won his fourth term in the war-time election of 1944.
To repeal the 22nd Amendment, or any amendment to the Constitution, is a prohibitively difficult process; first, the resolution to repeal the amendment would have to be passed by both houses of Congress, then the repeal of the amendment would have to be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures.
Serrano has introduced this very same resolution every two years since 1997, for a total of nine times, including four times – 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007 — when Republican George W. Bush was president, making it unlikely his true intent was to allow Democrats elected president to remain in office until they die.
Besides, even though Obama won re-election, his presidency remains unpopular to approximately half the electorate who voted in November.
Even before the second inauguration has had a chance to take place, the 2016 presidential election has already begun, with speculation mounting that Hillary Clinton is once again positioned to be Democratic Party front-runner to be the party’s presidential candidate four years from now.
Undoubtedly, others prominent within the Democratic Party are already calculating their chances to run, especially since the moment Obama takes the oath of office for a second time, he becomes a lame duck president, certain under the 22nd Amendment to be forced to retire after the presidential election four year from now.
When Georgetown University law professor Louis Michael Seidman can seriously call to abolish the U.S. Constitution because it’s provisions are “archaic, idiosyncratic and downright evil,” Tea Party patriots have more to worry about than the possibility the 22 Amendment might get repealed.
Rather than worrying about Obama running for a third term, the proper focus of the Tea Party should be to make sure we impress upon Obama the importance of taking seriously in this, his second term in office, the oath he is about to take now a second time, to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.
- What should concern us all is that Obama wants permission to raise the debt ceiling of the nation on his own authority, without so much as having to make a request to Congress to do so.
- What should concern us all is that Obama campaigns on class warfare themes of “taxing the rich” when any high school student capable of researching the tax records should be able to determine confiscating the resources of the wealthy could not reduce appreciably the federal deficits caused when Obama year after year spends $1 trillion or more than the federal government takes in as tax revenues.
- What should concern us all is that Obama appears to have every intention of limiting Second Amendment rights of the citizenry to bear arms, even when it is abundantly clear that disarming citizens not only makes society more dangerous, but also sets the stage for loss of additional freedoms by a government that has no respect for Constitutional limits.
The point is that Obama must be held to respecting the Constitution right now, in this, his second term in office
Yes, we should be prepared to fight to retain the 22nd Amendment.
Perhaps, we should even institute a new Constitutional amendment to limit the terms of members of the House and Senate.
But what the Tea Party needs to make clear to the White House that we intend to keep the Second Amendment, we expect the White House to submit a budget to Congress, we are resolved to cut federal government spending while reducing taxes, and we have no intention of respecting a president who refuses to take seriously the obligation to respect the Constitution.
