(Christian News Reports) – There is a lot of speculation over who is going to run on the Democrat ticket in 2020. A new competitor may have stepped up to the plate, and needs to be looked at carefully.
The up and coming potential candidate is former Obama Cabinet secretary, Julián Castro. According to Politico, Castro recently created a new PAC called “Opportunity First,” which seems strikingly familiar to President Trump’s “America First.” The new group is going to support people on a federal, state, and local level that could financially benefit Castro and his political goals.
Earlier this week, documents surfaced that revealed Opportunity First, and it has Castro listed as the President. At this time, Castro is refusing to comment on the released documentation.
In the past, Castro has made it clear that he has strong political goals, though he is careful about how he discloses information to the public. He has worked carefully with the Democrat Party, and has helped plenty of people in high places, including Hillary Clinton.
In fact, his love for Hillary Clinton got him into some serious trouble, according to USA Today. Castro was cited for violating federal law around this time last year, when he showed support for Hillary Clinton when she ran for president.
Castro told Katie Couric during an interview that he believes “Clinton is the most experienced, thoughtful, and prepared candidate for president that we have this year.” It turns out that, by giving this statement, he violated the Hatch Act, which was passed in 1939 — and forbids anyone who is in the executive branch, save for the president and vice president, from using their position to engage in political activity.
By the time it was all said and done, he admitted his fault by saying that, “When an error is made — even an inadvertent one — the error should be acknowledged. Although it was was not my intent, I made one here.”
Castro’s support for Clinton is only one reason he is becoming a rising star in the eyes of Democrats. He has explained in the past that he will not run in 2018, but he is not ruling out a 2020 presidential run.
On the show “Overheard with Evan Smith,” Castro stated that he would “look and see how things develop over the next year or so and then make a decision as to whether that’s something I want to do.” In anticipation of possibly running as a Democrat presidential candidate, he is slowly setting the stage.
Besides Castro’s political organization and his political connections, he is also writing his memoir. It seems like he is getting all of his ducks in line just in case he does decide to run for office.
Aside from working on Obama’s Cabinet in 2014, Castro’s other accomplishment was being mayor of San Antonio, and encouraging a one-eighth cent sales tax increase to fund centers for children younger than kindergarten. He also was a keynote speaker at the DNC in 2012, where he spoke of “investing today for prosperity tomorrow.”
While Castro has not officially announced his 2020 run, things are certainly shaping up to look at that way. All we can do is watch and listen as future announcements come down through the wire.
