School Embroiled In Controversy Over Displaying Of Confederate Flag

(CBS) – Parents and students at a suburban Kansas City high school are outraged because a group of students at Blue Springs High School have been displaying the Confederate battle flag on school property, reports KSHB-TV.

Student Sapphire Ray says a boy at lunch displayed the controversial flag.

“This boy was in the lunch room and put the Confederate flag on his back as if he was Superman or something,” she told KSHB.

SPECIAL: Modern Day Patriots, this is the time to stand shoulder to shoulder with our forefathers in Lexington and Concord. We need the Tea Party now more than ever.

She says an assistant principal confronted the student.

“He took the flag from him and when he walked away, the kid said an inappropriate word and he said I still have it on my hat,” Sapphire explained to KSHB.

A photo has been making the rounds of the same flag draped over a balcony inside the high school.

The flag-waving students say they are celebrating their family history with these displays.

But many students fear it’s being misused as a symbol promoting racism.

It’s a symbol with more than 150 years of history, much of which is controversial.

“The meaning of the flag isn’t about being a rebel anymore it’s more towards racism now,” Paige, a junior, told KSHB.

“They said that it doesn’t represent racism to them but you know the controversy over the flag. It’s okay for you to put it on your truck or whatever, but keep it at home for you to show it and bring it to school is inappropriate,” said another student to KSHB.

The school district issued a statement to KSHB: “We are aware of the incident and it was addressed immediately.  We strive to maintain a positive school environment for all of our students, and we take the necessary steps to continue to provide it. Blue Springs High School has a very positive school climate and this situation has provided some teachable moments for the young people in our care.”
